The Curious Case of Mercy Myra

Mercy Myra, one of the ‘successful’ Kenyan female musicians and pioneer of the afro-fusion genre had her stars growing until she was hit by an attitude problem. If you get your news stale, Mercy Myra divorced her 10-year husband and fellow musician Attitude. Well, it is a normal happening but in America where they got married, a marriage is considered successful if it lasts longer than fresh milk. Kim Kadashian was married for 72 hours while Britney Spears did a much lower time of 54 hours. Anyway, back to the story at hand. What makes her ordeal agonizing is the fact that she had put had career on hold to start a family and at the moment she’s trying hard to make a come back but her vocals get lost in the cacophony of modern music.

It reminded me of a short story ‘The Last Breath’ written by Sam Kahiga. The story immortalize the concept of self-sacrifice, a dying dad blows his last breath to give life to the son’s wife. The son had fallen in love with a blind woman and despite dampening remarks by family members, he did not waiver. The dad dying of cancer donated his cornea to the lady so she could see again. Like the father, Mercy Myra gave up her chance to be a superstar to make Attitude happy and bore him children, but they never lived happily ever after. It was a union of you go first then you pull me, the search for recording contract in the land of the free and home of the brave proved futile and I guess the frustration imploded in the marriage. The general idea, Attitude scouts for a recording deal once he lands one then it would be Myra’s chance, they would use their combined efforts and resources to support one person at a time, a bad idea.

The worst part is how Mercy is trying so hard to make a come back after the divorce. She sounds so desperate you could feel it in her vocals, I guess she feels cheated…really cheated. If she would reverse her decisions 10 years back maybe she would be an African superstar, was the sacrifice worth it? I’ll leave that to the pundits.

  1. Nice one. Though, as all things in life, including a coin, there are two sides to a coin. Her (A)ttitude problem must have had another side which we are oblivious of (but might be good).
